HIMAVAD GOPALASWAMY TEMPLE GUNDLUPET

There is an ancient temple  off Gundlupet town dedicated to  Lord Krishna by the name of GOPALASWAMY TEMPLE.. Few Kilometers ahead of Gundlupet on the Ooty highway leads to the road that leads to this temple. This temple is some 800 years old.

It is a simple rectangular structure with the deity in the middle. Private vehicles are not allowed to this temple.Note a very important strategic point. This place is up the nearby hill in a largely elephant and leopard infested corridor. To reach the temple one has to ascend the mountain which could take some twenty minutes and half the time taken to climb the Chamundi hill but the modus-operandi is almost the same.

The view from the hills downward and around is magnificent. There is regular flow of KSRTC buses from almost the foothill of the temple upwards and vice-versa.

PANDAVAPURA NEAR SRIRANGAPATTANA

There is a town close to Srirangapattana called Pandavapura which could be seen as a twin city of Srirangapattana but none the less a significant place. This place has a claim to fame on various counts. But one of the key aspects is that the French contingent of the Srirangapattana army was stationed here.

On the fateful day of 4th May 1799 Dewan Purniah also with Fateh Haider and another Marathi commander "Dondea Wagh" were stationed here. The Marathi Commander wanted to continue the fight though Tippu had fallen. However Dewan Purniah advised Fateh Haider to surrender to the English though they had a strong army of some thirty thousand men.

This town seems to be nerve center of trade during Vijayanagar times and the name Pandavapura assigned to this place by the Vijayanagar kings.
