THE NANJUNDESHWARA SRIKANTESHWARA TEMPLE NANJANGUD

Not many are aware of a major Shaivite temple in Nanjangud called as the Srikanteshwara temple or Nanjundeshwara temple adjacent to the main road and some one thousand years old.The name Nanjangud is derived from this temple.

The temple stucture is basically mammoth encompassing a vast area with a Shiva Linga in the sanctum-sanctorum.It looks imposing from the outside with many inscriptions in Kannada. The pillars of the temple is similar to the one seen in Sri Ranganatha temple suggesting it must be some thousand years old.

The temple has gone from the hands of the Chola kings to the Vijayanagar and to the Wodiyars of Mysore ,each of them making their unique contribution to this structure.Even Tippu Sultan used holy water from this temple to treat his ailing elephant they say.

Anyone from any part of the world cannot be pardoned  for not having seen this structure atleast once as its magnificence lay unsung on the fringes of a major highway that links Mysore to Gundlupet.
